Very interesting post – thanks for the details! It really does seem a shame that so much brewing history has not lived on in Prague, considering it’s wonderful pedgree for beer.

For those, who are interested in more informations about the czechoslovakian brewing history, might the article ” Pivovary Československa před 70 lety” on http://www.pivniobzor.cz/clanky/2008-02-12-pivovary-ceskoslovenska-pred-70-lety/ be of some interest. You’ll find there a complete list of all the breweries in Bohemia, Moravia, Slovakia and – funny enough – the czechoslovakian part of the Ukraina, which were brewing in 1935 (see “tabulka 1 – 7 “). The biggest producer in these times was “Staropramen”, followed by “Prazdroj” and “Kozel”. So, during the last 70 years, the situation didn’t change very much…….

I wonder what these beers where like, and why these “brewpubs” disappeared. Also, if there is anyone out there who has some old recipes.

When I go for my wanders around the city I often go by the old brewery on Betlemske Namesti, make me wonder what kind of beers they produced and who their regulars were – or perhaps I am becoming a misty eyed nostalgia nut.
