Climbing off it, I admit that Purkmistr wasn’t a stout and I was just trying to sneak one past y’all. But I did drink it while wishing it were a stout, and to fulfill my stout cravings. Doesn’t really count I guess.

By the way I pilgrimaged my ass all the way to U Radnice only to have them tell me that Primator Stout had been on tap for the grand total of one day and that was it. To sate my cravings this time I had a “Porter” in the bottle and felt kind of ill afterward. Not enough to add to the Zizkov puke piles, however.

Purmistr did not make stout, they brewed a nice dark lager. The first effort to make a stout here was(is) Staropramen Kelt…

The old Purkmistr was before my time. However, are you sure what they made was a stout and not a dark lager?

The very sad history of Purkmistr at Pivovary.info says:

sortiment piva před uzavřením

Purkmistr 10 % (tmavé výčepní; alk.: %; plněno do 0,5 l lahví a sudů)
Purkmistr 12 % (tmavý ležák; alk.: %; plněno do 0,5 l lahví a sudů)
Písař 8 % (světlé lehké; alk.: %; plněno do 0,5 l lahví)
Prior (světlý pšeničný kvasnicový ležák; alk.: 5,0 %; plněno do 0,5 l lahví a sudů)
Radní 10 % (světlé výčepní; alk.: %; plněno do 0,5 l lahví a sudů)

which makes it sound like they were making two dark lagers. No proper stout listed.

Of course, there is today a new Czech “Purkmistr,” though this is a brewpub in Plzeň, not a medium-capacity brewer in Domažlice:

As for where to get Primátor stout in Prague, everyplace that’s had it has sold out of it ASAP, so I can’t recommend anything just yet. When we have news of a permanent source, we’ll post it here.

Part the first: Evan, sir — Do I have to trudge to U Radnice in darkest Zizkov to find it or is there some central place with it toceny? I do remember having some good Primator brews on tap somewhere near Jungmannova but I forget exactly where because, well, I’d been drinking.

Part the second: Anyone remember Purkmistr? Czechia’s only other stout, once upon a time. There is still a Purkmistr sign on the window of a greasy spoon on Myslikova.

Hey Tom, I hope you like it. As Al says above, it’s pretty hard to find. Primátor is currently counting on producing 2,000 hectoliters — thus 400,000 individual half-liter portions — of stout in the near future. My guess is that they’re going to have to make more than that.

Thanks for the info about Primator Stout. I will definitely try get a few bottles to degust over the weekend while at the chata. It’s good to hear that more Czech breweries are experimenting away from the typical Pilsner-style lager.

From what I am picking up from the places that have had the Stout, it is proving to be very popular – on hearing last night that it was available in bottles at Pivni Galerie I switched off the oven and belted up there to get a couple of bottles, the last two they had apparently, although there will be more on the way – made sure to ask. Same story today at Zly Casy, sold out of their initial barrel but more on the way.
