But to be fair, CAMRA wasn't able to do much against when earlier this year Heineken and Carlsberg took over Scottish & Newcastle, other than shake their fists in the air, that is. Are you kidding? The nearest we have is the beer geeks' collective online grumblings over at <a href="http://www.irishcraftbrewer.com/community" rel="nofollow">Irish Craft Brewer</a>. We may be close to having the momentum to set up a proper organisation, but I don't think any of us quite know how or where to start. It'll be interesting to watch how things shake out in Ireland. I doubt if the Czech anti-monopoly office will take a stand against a merger until there are just two or three major breweries left. Our Competition Authority are currently <a href="http://www.tca.ie/NewsPublications/NewsReleases/NewsReleases.aspx?selected_item=211" rel="nofollow">investigating</a> something similar, surrounding Heineken's grab for Beamish & Crawford. With Diageo shifting more beer than the two put together, will it make a difference? I hope they think it does, since Heineken is already the second-largest player here.
