Hi Peter — thanks for your comments. Do you mean what Budvar calls "krausened lager" or "kvasnicový ležák" in Czech? If so, there are many breweries here that produce beers like this: Černá Hora, Bernard, Svijany, Kácov, Eggenberg, Polička, Kout, Patriot and more produce noteworthy versions of "yeast beer," as well as just about every Czech brewpub.

Budvar's version is very good, but not widely distributed. It's certainly a step in the right direction, however.

Nice balanced article. What about Budvar Lezak though? At least that is something different, though hardly as you say, innovative.

Is this unpasteurised style widely available? Popular?

Well, Evan. The :good: thing for PU is, that they have 4 breweries in their porfolio. So Kozel with it's smallest brewhaus is good for brewing speciality beers. If only they bought Regent in near by Trebon, for example, we could see more new beers sooner...

Čau, Honzo! Thanks for the comments. If it only took Budvar a half-century to come up with a beer that used to be part of their own portfolio, we can probably expect to see the Budvar polotmavý well before the year 2055...

To Pivero> Budvar dark was re-introduced to local market at that year 04 after nearly 50 years.

One more thing - South Bohemia tasting competition is way different from Pivni kuryr awards, which is basically a poll among their readers, no tasting at all. And Budvar must be a great beer as they won it 7 (maybe 8 ) times in a row...:)

Good points, Max! But Budvar Dark actually hasn't been around forever: Budvar's own website says that "Premium Dark Lager has complemented the traditional offer of beer from the brewery Budweiser Budvar, N. C. since 2004." Check it here:

http://www.budvar.cz/en/web/Produkty/Tmavy-lezak.html

Before that, you might remember that pubs which stocked Budvar often carried dark beer from Regent.

And no, I didn't forget Pardál — but it's not a spectacularly great brew, and I was already well past 1,400 words on this post. Have to save something for next time...

One more thing I wanted to add.
About the awards. Last year at the (think) Beer Festival in České Budějovice both Plzeňský Prazdroj and Budvar refused to let their beers compete for the České Pivo awards. They claimed that their flavours are so well known that it makes no sense to take part in a blind tasting competition...... They must not consider the jury of Pivní Kurýr as good as the one un South Bohemia...... Or is there something else?

Great Article!!! I agree with you 100%. You forgot to mention two things. Budvar dark has always existed, it is only now that they are advertising it, and that the only new product Budvar has come out with is Pardal, which aims to compete with Branik and Gambrinus 10°, not a lot of innovation there.
Still, Budvar makes some really good beers for a brewery of that size. In fact, when bottled, I prefer their ležák to Pilsner Urquell, but that is a matter of personal tastes.
And yes, Primátor rocks!!!!
